Dr. sc. Vesna Polić Foglar is a counsel at GBF Attorneys-at-law in Zurich, Switzerland. She specialises in the areas of Swiss and international transport law, especially liability of carriers (sea, inland waterways, road) for damage to cargo and delivery delays, cargo insurance, and carriers’ insurance and freight forwarders’ liability. She has more than 20 years of experience as legal advisor in the field of transport insurance and in dealing with transport claims. During her engagements with Bâloise Insurance, Elvia Insurance and Allianz Suisse, she dealt with major claims mainly in the field of transport providers’ liability, and provided legal support to the Underwriting and the Claims Department. As regards court proceedings, she was in charge of selecting and instructing solicitors. She was also responsible for the development of new insurance products i.e. drafting the general conditions for carrier’s liability insurance, including offers and tariffs in electronic form, and for the launch of the entire product. She also drafted general conditions for road carriers. Vesna Polić Foglar graduated and got her Ph.D. degree from the Faculty of Law, University of Zagreb, where she has also been a senior research associate at the Institute of Maritime Law for over a decade. For many years she lectured on maritime law in workshops organised by the United Nations Conference for Trade and Development (UNCTAD) in many countries. She has delivered numerous papers at various meetings and has written a large number of articles. She is a member of various transport law and maritime law associations in Switzerland, Germany and Croatia. She speaks German, English and Croatian and has a very good knowledge of French and Italian.
